Australian artist set to make Eurovision history by performing indigenous lyrics in Sweden showdown – as fellow Australian represents another country

Two Australian bands are vying not only for the spotlight at Eurovision this year, but also for the ultimate musical victory in Malmö, Sweden.

South Australian electronic duo Electric Fields and Sydney singer Silia Kapsis, who will represent Cyprus, are gearing up for what promises to be a hard-fought battle in the music industry’s equivalent of the Olympics.

Electric Fields, made up of singer Zaachariaha Fielding and keyboardist and producer Michael Ross, kicked off their rehearsals this Thursday in style.

Known for their electric performances, they are set to make history by incorporating indigenous languages into their Eurovision performance, a first for an Australian group.

Fielding, in a display of cultural pride, will perform parts of their song One Mikali (One Blood) in Yankunytjatjara, the language of the Anangu people, adding deep depth to their act.

At their visually striking rehearsal in Malmö, Fielding was a sight to behold, dressed in a breathtaking white dress that flowed effortlessly as he moved across the stage, lit by a backdrop featuring his own work entitled “Paraulpi”.

This piece not only inspired the stage’s LED display, but also added a personal touch that resonated with the audience.

Meanwhile, Sydney teen sensation Silia Kapsis is ready to dazzle Eurovision fans with her song Liar.

Known for her stint as a Nickelodeon personality, Kapsis showcases her acclaimed choreographic talents in a high-energy performance.

Kapsis follows in the footsteps of Andrew Lambrou, making her the second Australian entered by Cyprus for the Eurovision contest.

Both groups will perform in the first semi-final on May 8, facing the daunting task of impressing the die-hard Eurovision voters who will determine the ten countries that advance to the grand final.

Australia has a strong track record at Eurovision, having secured a place in the grand final every year since its invitation in 2015, except 2021, when Covid-19 restrictions limited participation.

Last year, Australian progressive synth metal band Voyager landed ninth place, while the country’s best result to date was achieved by Dami Im in 2016 with her mesmerizing rendition of Sound of Silence.
