Wrexham refuse to rule out move for Jamie Vardy as Leicester legend nears end of contract

Wrexham’s chief executive has refused to rule out the possibility of a stunning move for Leicester City legend Jamie Vardy.

The ambitious Hollywood-backed club will look to strengthen their squad again this summer following back-to-back promotions from non-league football to League One.

It’s been an incredible journey for the Welsh side, who saw their fortunes transformed after the arrival of actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney three years ago, with a series of smart signings helping them end their spell of 15 years outside the Football League.

Paul Mullin left League Two to help lead promotion out of the National League and has since become a hero at Wrexham thanks to his 100 goals and 11 assists in 133 games.

Winger Elliot Lee then left Luton’s books to sign with the Dragons, while Wrexham Chiefs also managed to lure a trio of former Premier League stars to Ben Foster’s Racecourse – who has since retired – James McClean and Steven Fletcher.

And it looks like another might now be in their crosshairs.

Vardy himself has just sealed promotion to the top flight with Leicester, scoring 18 league goals to help the Foxes win the league title.

But the 37-year-old striker’s future beyond this season is uncertain, with his contract at the King Power Stadium set to expire this summer.

Vardy cemented his name in Leicester folklore during 13 seasons with the club – becoming the first ever £1million non-league player, helping the club to promotion to the Premier League and then arguably the title the most improbable in the history of English football, while also lifting the title. FA Cup and Community Shield.

In total, Vardy has scored 190 goals for Leicester City.

It has been suggested that he will be offered a new contract to stay at the King Power this summer, but would the opportunity to join the Wrexham adventure be of interest?

The Welsh club’s executive director Humphrey Ker was recently asked about a possible Vardy move and refused to rule anything out.

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds plan to bring Travis Kelce and Jason Kelce plus Taylor Swift to Wrexham

“There’s nothing to say that Jamie Vardy wouldn’t be a great Wrexham player,” Ker told SPORTbible.

“It’s not a name I’ve ever mentioned inside the building but, you know, the age and profile wouldn’t put us off.”

Wrexham appear to be making room for new signings, after announcing the departure of eight players at the end of the season, including the club’s beloved captain Luke Young.

Before their departure, however, the promotion’s winning team was treated by their owners to an all-expenses-paid trip to Las Vegas.

It will be business again as they return from their post-season breaks, with Kerr joining talkSPORT this week to reflect on their last two seasons and their goals in League One next season.

He told Hawksbee and Jacobs: “We have every chance of achieving something special again next year.”

Whether that includes Vardy, we’ll have to wait and see.
